Pre Employment Screening - New Survey
A Survey recently released by the Society for Human Resources Managment (SHRM) showed that 96% of comapnies surveyed were engaged in some form of pre employment screening, including background and reference checking. I-9 verifications (confirming eligibility to work in the United States) was the most commonly used screening tool, though only 85% of respondents said they always verify the SSN. 68% said they always perform a criminal background check, despite the fact that the absence of a central source of criminal information makes obtaining a comprehensive report difficult. And 35 percent said their companies always verify a candidate’s educational background, as well as any certification noted on their resumes. Finally, two out of three respondents said that they always obtain an applicant’s dates of employment, only 25% said they are always able to get adequate information in other areas, such as job performance, interpersonal skills, work ethic, etc... The survey analysis is only available to SHRM members, however you can read more in an article by Adam Geller of Associated Press.
