Herbert Vest, founder of True.com, a new online-dating site, wants laws that would require screening prospects. Vest has been pushing several states to pass a legislation mandating that all online dating sites do criminal background checks on their members or carry a disclaimer if they choose not to. Match.com, Yahoo, Microsoft, and many others argue that Vest is playing up problems that don't exist and that performing 'Instant Criminal Searches' can give Online daters a false sense of security. The push to regulate Online dating has earned Vest free publicity as a company already performing background checks. No matter what critics claim, Vest insists he's motivated by high ideals.
